In an effort to regulate alcohol, the Maine legislature passed an act that would require local liquor "manufacturers" to post a $1,000 bond. Retailers would be required to post a $400 bond. The act also gave local towns, cities and plantations powers to limit the number of liquor retailers in their areas. There were exceptions, however, relating to medications and to alcohol imported from abroad.

FIRST REPORT OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR SUPPRESSING INTEMPERANCE AND OTHER VICES. NORWICH, JUNE 21, 1847. [n.p. n.p.] 1847 Softcover Good Softcover Pamphlet (approximately 5" x 7 7/8"), stitched as issued. 16pp. Original light green printed paper wrappers. A group of clergymen and lay persons in Norwich, Connecticut formed an association in 1847 to battle drunkenness. The group drafted a constitution and a pledge to use their influence to "cause the due execution of all laws for suppressing dram shops and other kindred establishments. . . " By June of 1847, the Association had managed to garner over 600 signatures of those willing to take the pledge. This pamphlet, which does not appear in OCLC, sets out the organizational structure of the association, expands on its arguments against "rumsellers" and owners of gambling houses, and lists the over 600 names of those who had taken the pledge. Scarce. A few stains and crease marks with 5 small numbers in red ink at the top left hand corner of front wrapper. Right lower corners dog eared. A good copy.

One single leaf of tan paper, folded into 4 pages. Each page approximately 8 1/2" x 11". Callaghan & Co. , a publisher and bookseller of law books, announced the publication of James High's, A Treatise of the Law of Extraordinary Legal Remedies, Embracing Mandamus Quo Warranto, and Prohibition. The first page is used to describe the book, the second and third pages contain excerpts of reviews of High's previous and current work, and the fourth page contains advertisements for two other titles by the publisher. An interesting example of law book advertising in the late 19th century. Crease marks from folding but otherwise clean and fully intact.

This leaflet gives a succinct history of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, beginning with Jane Addams' formation of the Women's Peace Party in 1915 during World War I and ending with the League's efforts to advocate neutrality during the period before World War II. One small crease at upper right hand corner of first page. Otherwise, a clean and bright copy.

In these two sessions of the Massachusetts legislature, the formation of the American Antiquarian Society was approved as were the charters of a number of corporations formed for manufacturing cotton and woolen textiles (Amesbury, Duxbury, Oxford, Waltham, Pawtucket, etc). Wrapper soiled with chips, dampstain and a 1 1/2" tear along the edges. Paper spine is worn away. Text has soiling and some dampstains.

"[Washington, D.C.]" 1876 First edition Very good 8vo. 21, blank, [1]pp. Disbound. In 1874, George Cannon defeated Robert Baskin for a seat in Congress from Utah. Baskin, a member of the anti-Mormon Liberal party, challenged the outcome with the U. S. Congress, claiming that Cannon was not a US citizen and that he was also a Mormon and a practicing polygamist. Cannon presented a spirited defense. Congress subsequnetly ordered that the papers surrounding the case be published in 1876. A scarce anti-Mormon document in very nice condition. 44th Congress, 1st Session. House of Representatives. Mis. Doc. No. 166. Paper slighly browned. Still, a very good copy.
