Campaign Clubs, Attention! The McKinley Tin Napoleon Hat. The Most Appropriate Article Ever Offered for Campaign Purposes. Showy, Attractive, Inexpensive. c. 1896 Very good Circa 1896 political broadside, approximately 5 1/2" x 7 1/2", with an image of William McKinley in a plumed Napoleonic hat. During the 1896 Presidential campaign between McKinley an William Jennings Bryan, the New York Journal cartoonist, Homer Davenport, lampooned McKinley by depicting him wearing a Napoleonic hat that was too big. This appears top have become a running joke, even for McKinley's supporters. The New York Times reported that on the evening of McKinley's nomination (June 18, 1896 in St. Louis) "the prize idiot of the convention appeared...with one of the Napoleonic hats which have been put on Major McKinley by the cartoonists, and started to walk to the platform on the tables of the newspaper men...The newspaper men pelted him with wads of paper as he made his way to the platform..." This political broadside appeared during the campaign as part of the joke.
