5 A LA PHOTO VIEWS CHICAGO.
Chicago Rand McNally & Co. [n.d. but circa 1883] Hardcover Very good Hardcover
Small booklet (approximately 3 1/2" x 5") of stylized images depicting Chicago city scenes in the late 1870's and early 1880's. One sheet with 14 plates, folded into 6 leaves with 1 plate attached to the inside of both the front and back boards of binding. Bound in heavily decorated and embossed green cloth binding with beveled boards. This is a very nice example of a tourist booklet from the early 1880's. Rand McNally issued a similar booklet in 1875, entitled Chicago Rebuilt 1875, which used 12 of the 14 city scenes in this item. This particular title, however, is uncommon. Worldcat locates just three copies in U. S. libraries. Near fine. Just modest wear to the binding with all plates clean and intact.

6 A Letter Addressed to Lord Sackville West by a Citizen of California and Letter from Lord Sackville British Minster at Washington to an American Citizen.
New York David H. Gildersleeve, Printer 1888 Very good
4 1/2" x 7" sheet with the citizen's letter printed on one side and the Sackville's reply on the other. The writer is a naturalized citizen, native of Britain, and seeks advice on how to vote in the upcoming Presidential election. He seeks assurances from Sackville that President Cleveland's recent unfavorable policy toward Canada is just a political ploy and that he will resume his more friendly, pro-British policies once he's safely reelected. He says he is asking "privately and confidentially" - apparently it was leaked, and this printing resulted.

AFRICANER, OR MISSIONARY TRIALS.
17 AFRICANER, OR MISSIONARY TRIALS.
Philadelphia Presbyterian Board of Publication [n.d. but circa 1850] Softcover Good Softcover
32mo. (3 3/4" x 5 7/8") 36pp. plus an inserted illustration, entitled "Are you Africaner?" Original black cloth-covered wrappers with blind stamped decorations and pale yellow endpapers. Lettering stamped in gold on front wrapper. Contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper, dated 1851. This is a very uncommon title published by the Presbyterian Church, which was intended for children. It recounts the activities and challenges of missionaries in South Africa who encountered a fierce tribal chieftain, known as Africaner. Africaner was eventually converted to Christianity by the English missionary, Robert Moffat. Although this story was published in England around 1843 by John Snow, this is the first appearance in the U. S. Wrappers showing wear with a vertical scratch mark. Moderate foxing to text. A good copy.
